Progress report

July 29, 2009

Hello all,

Alan and Eileen’s Grand Designs workshops have had a fantastic start here at Eastside. 13 young people attended the workshops yesterday to work on large scale books based around the theme of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’. The last day of the project is tomorrow, feel free to pop along some time during the day if you would like to see what the group have been up to.

Each of the four projects for Graphic Truths now have a group allocated to them. Chris and Eileen’s Graphic reportage workshops start tomorrow at the Idea Store Whitechapel, and Tom, Oliver and Shane’s projects will all begin in September.

Please remember to log your research and thoughts throughout the projects in the evaluation frameworks that you can find on this site.

Hope you’re all having a nice summer and catch up soon.

All the best,

Truly

Resources and progress

July 17, 2009

Hello all,

We’re making good progress in setting up the workshops and we now have a group in line for each project.

I am starting to order resources this week for Alan’s project which is taking place at Eastside from the 28th – 30th July.

Could the other groups please begin to give me an idea of resources that you will need for your projects as it would be great if I could order things in bulk if needed.

You can reply to this post or else detail resources on the individual projects pages.

Thanks,

Truly

Workshop Framework

Graphic Truths workshops planner

Thank you all for getting some ideas over to me last week. It’s great to hear how things are developing.

I have updated the workshop planner to include more details about Shane / Tom and Shane / Oliver’s workshops. Could you please have a look at the framework and check that this is correct and begin to think about resources and age groups.

Eileen and Christopher could you please get some ideas about your investigative reporting project over to me please, as we have a group in mind to pitch it to.

Alan and Eileen Could you please have a look at the Graphic designs entry in the workshop planner and get back to me with ideas for resources. We have a limited budget, so need to be resourceful and plan materials well in advance!

I look forward to hearing from you soon,

Truly

Graphic Poetry

June 25, 2009

Here is a brief summary of the Graphic Poetry project that Shane and Oliver will be running. We want to use this as a proposal for schools. Could Shane and Oliver have a read of this as soon as possible and make any comments so that we can start recruiting youg people.

Graphic Poetry

This is a new and exciting project that combines art and literature to create a Graphic Poetry installation. It is a project in which young people explore poetry through the graphic arts. Participants will interpret favourite poems and place them in a new modern light, then create large scale art work from these interpretations that take you on a journey around the school.

Hi Alan and Eileen,

We need to begin recruiting youngpeopl for your project in the last week of July. Here is a sample paragraph that i have drawn up to send out. Could you have a look at it and leave your comments here please:

Grand Designs

An exciting opportunity to make art larger than life!

Drawing on inspiration from Graphic novels, manga and comics you will work with professional writers and artists to create giant pages of a book. Bring your own words to life using printing and other mediums and see your work in an exhibition open to the public.

This is a great chance to explore and expand your artistic talents and see graphic novels in a new light.

The project will take place at Eastside Educational Trust in the last week of July.

Addition to meeting notes

June 24, 2009

As Tom Humberstone was unable to make the initial meeting i have included a few notes here from a phone conversation we had after the meeting to give you an idea of Tom’s interests in the project. You can find out more at www.ventedspleen.com

Tom Humberstone

  • Tom has an interest in Graphic Reportage and autobiography and is currently working on a project documenting the NHS from different points of view.
  • In 2008 he travelled around America with a journalist to document the elections. Tom illustrated the journalist’s writings.
  • Runs a pen club weekly / monthly which is a gathering of artists and writers.
  • Is more comfortable dealing with adult themes
  • Interested in the idea of a workshop where everyone draws the first panel of the comic and it gets passed on.

Alan and Eileen’s Project of large scale books is pencilled in the diary to be at Eastside in the last week of July. Any ideas on more specific dates in that week so that we can begin to recruit and inform the young people?

Meeting Notes

June 15, 2009

Hello all,

We have uploaded the meeting notes from our initial meeting. Could you have a look at it an confirm you agree with what we have recorded or add any comments on the notes?

It can act as a memory jog for the types of projects and partnerships we discussed in the meetings.

Thanks,

Truly
